My Story
Hi! My name is Joy Sawyer and I’m a first-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science (Honours) at Queen’s University. I am also a lifeguard, swim instructor, have swam competitively for most of my life, and absolutely love travelling.
I have grown up Catholic and have experienced the Lord’s unmatched love firsthand. I love getting involved in my community. Whether it be through youth ministry, being a camp counsellor for Holy Redeemer Parish’s annual summer Bible camp, being an altar server, co-founding Girl’s For Change charity, or being an advocate for Black excellence through multiple clubs and initiatives, giving back has always been a passion of mine.
Upon my entrance to Queen’s, I was introduced to CCO through Newman House (our on-campus Catholic Chaplaincy). After meeting all the wonderful people there, I joined Discovery and am now leading the faith study this semester! I am so excited to see how God moves in my life this year.
Why do I want to be on Mission?
Ever since I was young, I have dreamed about going on a mission and joining my Christian brothers and sisters in spreading the Good News. The opportunity makes me feel part of something absolutely incredible and excited to change others’ lives. This year, I have been inspired by John 16:33, where Jesus proclaims “I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Starting university has been extremely challenging and, upon reflection and prayer, I feel called to share the message of peace taught in this passage. Knowing that God has overcome every heartache, every setback, and every fear has given me deep comfort, and I am eager to share this encouragement with the millions of youth in Lisbon. I am also interested in joining the CCO mission team in Portugal this summer to develop new Christian relationships, learn more about worldwide evangelization, and be a witness to the amazing work of Jesus Christ.
