My Story

Hi, my name is Miguel Bayer, and I am a fourth year Computer Science student at Carleton University. I grew up Catholic but never saw much point in it, and by high school, I became indifferent to God, seeing Him as distant a very distant figure. In my first year of university, I stopped going to Mass and was following the lifestyle of those around me, thinking that if everyone else was doing it and seemed happy, it couldn’t be that bad. In my third year, a movie made me curious about what the Catholic Church taught on certain moral issues, and after looking into it, I realized that Jesus was real and that if He was who He claimed to be, His words carried weight. Everything changed when I got involved with CCO, where I finally understood what Jesus had done for me and made the decision to say yes to a personal relationship with Him—since then, my faith has become more personal, I’ve found a strong community, and I trust in Jesus’ grace rather than fearing failure.

Why do I want to be on Mission?

When I decided to put Jesus at the center of my life, I started trying to follow his teachings as closely as possible and wanted to live my life based on what Jesus asked of us. The one thing I was always worried about being able to accomplish was Jesus’s instruction of spreading our faith. I never knew how I would go about accomplishing this, I was always a more reserved person, and never really comfortable with the idea of walking up to people and trying to spread the faith. However, after outreach, I realized that I not only had the confidence to spread the faith, but I also had the passion to bring people to having a personal relationship with Jesus. Going to Malta would give me a chance to not only introduce others to the faith and bring them to a personal relationship with Jesus, but it would also strengthen my own relationship with him as well.
