I was raised in a very culturally Catholic family. What I mean by that is, I was Catholic because I was Filipino. I grew up going through the motions of going to Church, receiving the Sacraments, singing in choir, praying before eating, but I never understood why. I didn’t know what it meant to be Catholic, to be in a relationship with God, it was just go through the motions because that’s what I’m “supposed to do” as a Catholic. I entered university with this mindset.
Going to school at Ryerson University in downtown Toronto, I was faced with so many distractions that I stopped going through the motions of being Catholic and just God as someone I could talk to when I needed him. I got involved with CCO in my second year through taking faith studies, and my perspective of Him slowly changed. It wasn’t until my fourth year at CCO’s National Conference, Rise Up, where I understood that He desired a personal relationship with me, and I made that decision to place Him at the centre of my life. After this, I lived my life understanding that being Catholic, and everything that I did growing up, was based on that foundation of a personal relationship. I developed a solid prayer life, got more involved with my parish and other ministries, and eventually discerned a call during World Youth Day 2016 to join CCO as a full-time missionary.
That call has brought me to serve currently as the Campus Team Leader at the University of Calgary (U of C). I’ve seen God do such amazing things in our campus ministry these past few years, and I’m excited to see what He wants to do in me and through me to proclaim the Gospel on this campus and build a multiplying movement and leaders for the renewal of the world.
ONGOING PRAYER REQUESTS
Please pray for every student at the University of Calgary. That their hearts may be open to accepting the invitation to develop a personal relationship with Jesus. Additionally, for myself, my team, and the students that co-labour with us in the mission. That we may be strong and courageous in sharing Jesus with others clearly and simply.
